Earth Hour 2011

Earth Hour 2011 - 8:30 PM, Saturday 26 March, 2011

It may look crazy to switch off lights just for an hour in a year. In today's fast moving life, we are surrounded by electrical and electronic stuffs every here and there. Mobiles, TVs, PCs, ACs, music systems, fridge, washing machine and the list goes on. We have been contributing everyday much towards the carbon emission in one way or the other. Result? Heat is getting trapped in the atmosphere, warmness is increasing, climate is changing and the Earth is heading towards disasters.

This Earth Hour is an opportunity for us to realize the importance of nature and the environment. Each one of us has to understand our responsibilities towards the Earth and contribute something constructive from our part. Remember that Earth Hour is only an event to create awareness among people. Switching off the lights for this one hour alone will not help. We can and MUST do even beyond that. Many of us have already been doing that even before the very concept of Earth Hour was initiated. So continue your good work and spread to others.

Btw, there is a page called BEYOND THE HOUR where you can post your action in few words or see what others have posted about saving environment.

This action is one of the few contributions towards the environment from my side. Just go and take a look on what people have posted and what you can do.

Earthquake in China

Much before the disaster in Myanmar is forgotten, one of the biggest earthquakes, in the last few decades, hit China yesterday (11 May 2008). The quake that occurred in Sichuan province in South China measured 7.9 magnitude on Richter scale and took the lives of more than 12,000 people. The number might increase further, according to local civil ministry there. This is the biggest quake disaster in China after 1976 earthquake which claimed more than 200,000 lives.

The two different major disasters like cyclone & earthquake in two different Asian countries of Myanmar & China have occurred in a span of just two weeks. I may be silly but I could not avoid thinking this that will there be any other similar disaster soon ?? I have no words to explain my mind. So let's forget it for now.

Let us pray for peace of the souls of those who died and for the quick recovery of those who survived the quake.

God bless them!!

Earth Hour - 2008

"Please switch off your lights on 29th March at 8pm for 1 hour"

This will not only contribute directly in reducing global warming by non-generation of heat but also create awareness among the people about global warming & its effects.

After getting very good response in Sydney, where it started last year, Earth Hour has now spread across the world with 20+ major cities that have agreed to follow this voluntarily at their local times.

I understand that some of us have already begun following environmental friendly tips wherever possible in our daily life. However, following Earth Hour now would only add more to our contribution.

You may check this site for more details - http://www.earthhour.org/

So don't forget. 29th March. 8pm - 9pm, local times.

Go Green!

"GREEN"

One of the best colors with which nature looks beautiful. Now this green is diminishing gradually day by day due to the so-called modernisation of our globe. Now only 30% of the total land area on our earth is covered by forests down from about 50% centuries ago. Every human on this planet is responsible for the current situation of global warming. Let's try to conserve greens & save our planet. World Environment Day falls on June 5 every year. But you need not wait for a date to do your duty.

Try to following the below principles at your level best.

1) Switch-off the vehicle engine when not in signals or halt

2) Power off your PC or atleast Monitor while leaving office
3) Whenever possible, use fans instead of A/Cs
4) Use a cloth bag for shopping
5) Reduce not just plastics but even paper usage
6) Don't waste water
7) Try to wash clothes with minimal water
8) Dispose wastes only in the area meant for it
9) Plant atleast one sapling/tree every month
10) Try to give off to your vehicles and PC atleast a day in a month

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
— Mahatma Gandhi

I do follow the above principles to my best. Do you?
